"Socialized" Canadian Health Care
Tuesday, April 06, 2010 1:55 PM on j-body.org
I didn't post this in other threads because there wasn't a specific mention of it, or not enough of a mention of it, for me to feel like I'd be doing anything but railroading the thread.

However, in many health care debates, especially the Canada VS United-States ones, everyone always mentions Canada's Socialized health care. All well and nice except that uh... we don't have socialized health care. We do however have socialized health insurance and that's not quite the same thing. Most of our hospitals are in the private sector and are run by private entities AND are run at a profit. Sort of like... well... yours.

Just thought I'd clear that up.

===

As for my own opinion of the Health Care/Insurance debate. Well, the problem with your new system, even with the fixes, is that it's fixed in an extremely stupid way. You see, our system is fairly cheap and efficient because everyone in the country is under the same plan. Also, everyone starts to pay in from the minute they're 18. So that means that a lot of healthy people are paying for the sick ones.

Insurance is just a number's game, like gambling. It's not complicated. Essentially a minority of people will never, ever get sick and another minority will be chronically (Read: Expensively) sick. The rest will be sick now and again, but spend most of their life healthy. So the ones who are healthy, are paying for the sick; and if you look at it in cold hard numbers it actually pays for itself quite well. If you don't believe me, just think of smokers and drinkers and how when they get sick they tend not to stay sick for long, because usually what they have is terminal. and lung/liver cancers kill you very quick (Under a year). Even people who have chronic illnesses like diabetes and high blood pressure don't spend much time in the hospital. So let's pretend, very unscientifically, that roughly 65% of people are healthy and 35% aren't. Seen that way, there's plenty of healthy people able to pay for everyone who has the bad luck not to be.

However, all this falls apart if everyone waits until they're 38 to get insured because they'd rather have the extra dough. It also falls apart if it's run by a bunch of small-ish companies because they don't have the huge pool of healthy people. Some companies might have 80% healthy/20% sick. Other's might have 20% healthy/80% sick. The numbers would be all over the place. One unifed system works best in this particular case because you need as many people under the same policy to make it work. When it's fragmented, it's not efficient and the costs go up.

So basically this new system you have is "socialized" health insurance in nothing but the name. It's run like your old insurance system (except you're being forced to buy the stupid thing) and it's not efficient. Your leaders have found a way to say they're helping while at the same time screwing you.

You gotta admire them for their cleverness.

When you get a system like ours, I think you'll like it, but you don't have one like ours right now and well... that sucks.

Yawn. Another boring diatribe from the country that is too small to matter, but can't seem to realize it.

Call us when your cute little collection of provinces matters. Hey, it COULD happen!

YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. Socialism isn't "just a name". No more drivel from you.

Had you been following the action here in the War Forum, you'd recall our numerous admonishments to Canadians who try to compare a nation the size of Uganda to the USA.
Feel free to search and get up to speed if you don't want to look silly yet again.

Err... I never compared Canada to the US.

Exactly. There's no comparison.

Thanks for whatever it is you did do. I think.

No one needs to prove him wrong. He said it in his own post. As soon as you turn 18 in Canada, you start paying taxes for a government run (not owned) healthcare program.

In any case, this post was never meant out of scorn for the US. You're my southern cousins and I always wish you the best. Hell... my wife's American and she's the best women I have ever known.

I don't have a beef with Canada....not much of one. But your system is not one that I want. Most of my countrymen agree with me.

Yep. Sure is when it's come to this point. Yet somehow, you keep wasting bandwidth whining about it. Why? Oh, I know. Because you have little else to add, as usual, so you settle for echoes, echoes, echoes...

You are the Poster Child for repeating oneself. You've earned a temporary ban for Reposting

And Bill, you are the poster child for the pot-kettle scenario. You're the biggest offender of every bit of foolishness you like to accuse others of posting.

Mm hmm. Embrace Canada. That proves me wrong. Or, it allows you to take impotent potshots to soothe your tortured rightiness. In either case, you choose to waste your effort. Nice work!

Oops, you did it again, Britney.

Care to address the subject matter, or will you settle for whining?

Good article. I like the effective counterpoint it provides.
I can't say as it's a comprehensive view or comparison of Europe's policies to ours, but it sure makes me yearn for one.
